Everything about Micro Center totally explained

Micro Center is an American computer department store that was founded in 1979 by two former Radio Shack employees. The first Micro Center store was a 900 sq. ft. storefront located in the Lane Avenue Shopping Center in Upper Arlington, OH.

History

  • 1980 - Original Micro Center store: small storefront on Lane Avenue in Columbus, Ohio
  • 1981 - Moved to an old “mini mall” created from a former G.C. Murphy store in the Lane Avenue shopping center; became “The Computer Department Store”
  • 1984 - Second store in Westerville, Ohio opened
  • 1986 - MEI, the direct mail division of Micro Center, was formed as well as Corporate Sales which sold to commercial users
  • 1988 - Third store opened in September of 1988 in Marietta, Georgia
  • 1991 - Stores in Mayfield Heights and Sharonville, Ohio
  • 1992 - Fairfax, Virginia and St. Davids, Pennsylvania. Micro Electronics, the fourth stand-alone division, was launched this same year with its first product, the WinBook notebook computer.
  • 1993 - Tustin, California store opened
  • 1994 - Houston, Texas store opened
  • 1995 - Cambridge, Massachusetts and Dallas, Texas
  • 1996 - Chicago, Illinois store opens taking over what used to be a "Handy Andy"
  • 1997 - Santa Clara, California Micro Center opened
  • 1998 - Opening of the Westbury, New York store on Long Island
  • 1999 - Opening of Denver, Colorado and Overland Park, Kansas
  • 2000 - Opening of Westmont, Illinois and St. Louis Park, Minnesota stores
  • 2002 - Opening of Madison Heights/Troy, Michigan and Gwinnett/Duluth, Georgia stores
  • 2007 - Opening of the North Jersey/Paterson store.
